Sharing with you today a great painted dining room furniture makeover. My client had received her grandmothers dining set… Once used by her brother and now was the steward of this great set herself. She had sent over a Pinterest board with wonderful ideas on what she liked!! I always love being able to use that as a great tool for a starting base for where we hope to go. Armed with a bag full of paint samples I headed over to pick up the set and choose our colors. And although she had originally shown me lots of duck egg blues… I knew with the color of her room this might not work. So I took just about every brand and all of my favorite greys.
Here’s the room and the furniture we started with. And as you can see the walls were a brighter blue with the lower portion being a darker grey.
So we pulled out the duck egg sample and instantly said No. With smiles. I don’t know if you can see but all of her other walls in the open area are the most beautiful color in my world… Restoration Hardware Silver Sage. Holding up all the beautiful and different grey’s we decided on 2. Maison Blanche Franciscan Grey and Confederate Grey. Unable to decide on just one color we decided to incorporate both. The darker grey on the wall would show off the lighter shade of grey on the hutch. And because she love the blue grey of Confederate Grey, we went with that for the table legs and chairs and a hint of it on the back of the hutch to pull it all together!! I love how it turned out!!
Here are a few before pics:
I did use a trick for the chairs. There were 6 of them and to make sure that they got great coverage with less paint I used a spray primer in gray. It’s almost the exact same color and with the darker colors in chalk paint you often don’t get the best coverage. This reduced my number of coats- thus time and a money.
And here is the set after. I need to get a room shot after but I didn’t…
Staining pine can be tricky. It often doesn’t take the color as you hope… and this fell true with this set. I used many different colors before deciding to go with General Finishes Java Gel. It darkened it up beautifully.
The hutch is painted out in Maison Blanche Franciscan Grey and waxed in light brown wax to warm the color. It’s one of my favorites when you use the darker waxes to give it depth and warmth. The hardware is missing on the lower portion because the client is replacing it with new. Paint and new hardware breath new life!!
