Today, I want to bring to you a book that fell into my hands at just the right time. Unsinkable Faith, written by Tracie Miles of Proverbs 31 ministry. You will be invited into her own story, experiences, and struggles. She beautifully combines her story with application of scriptures we can turn to for help. Tracie’s writing style is very personal. Like a friend sitting and talking.
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” Proverbs 23:7
Unsinkable Faith
I enjoyed Tracie’s interactive approach of asking questions, providing memory verses, and offerings of weekly challenges. She encourages you to memorize the verses. This is especially helpful in all areas of life. Scripture tells us to hide the Word in our hearts, so that we might not sin against God. (Psalm 119:11) And we read in Colossians 3:1- we should set our hearts on things above. We do this by memorizing and drawing near to God and His Word. Tracie also encourages us to grab a journal. Which I just happen to have a couple. Suddenly, this book became so much more than a book. It became a personal look into my own faith and where I am shaken. It’s like a mini bible study.
Your Feelings Aren’t the Boss of You
Unsinkable Faith, was an unexpected blessing for me. Much like the Life Action Summit (revival) we just walked through at church. Those who know me well, know that I live with a pretty positive and cheerful attitude. Considering a lifelong journey of battles, I decided early on that it was only way to stay strong and keep fighting. However, what I didn’t expect in this book was to realize much of what I thought was truly healed, still was holding part of my heart hostage. As I said above, the book does dive deep into God’s Word and is filled with honest thoughts and practical ideas on transforming our own thoughts. The chapters are broken into sub parts that make it very easy to read. With stories, scriptures, and tools to really encourage the transforming of the way we approach and think.
Our Thoughts Have Power
We have all encountered hardships. But it’s the way we respond and how we prevail that Peter tells us shows if our faith is genuine. (1 Peter 1:7) We can choose joy in the midst of hard times. But it is a choice. And Unsinkable Faith is filled with practical ways to implement and change the way see our hardships. Pointing us straight to the Word and the God who has everything we need. “Live in the freedom within the light of God’s grace & sufficiency.”- Tracie Miles
Count the Costs
The chapter “Count the Costs.” Tracie writes about our bodies, the effects of negativity, and stress. To say it really touched home for me, would be a grand understatement. We have had a really hard time walking a tough battle for 4-5 years with our oldest daughter. Moving to a new area and with a desire to love all God’s people took form in advocating for a homeless teen. Which is a good thing. But coupled with two of my own daughters who have special needs and the advocating that I do daily, this good thing became more than I knew. Even when we think we are handling it, the damage is often already done. At the peak of it all, it was too late to realize it. I suffered a physical attack that led to months of testing away from my family and home. Leading to the ultimate diagnosis of MS.
Count It All for Joy
“God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is the shield for all who look to him for protection.” Psalm 18:30
Unsinkable Faith, how I wish I had been able to hold this book in my hands last year. Deciding ahead of time I will find joy in all things, has been a huge blessing. But this book found my hands in a period of intense physical pain. It was a gift and a great reminder. Even in our hardest times, we can be real. Real with ourselves and others, but especially with Jesus. He has given us assurances throughout the bible to keep us high above the sinking waters. If we would lean in and press deeper; those thorns we cannot remove, might just be our greatest blessing.
